A researcher who examined 10,000 Hotmail, MSN and Live.com passwords that were recently exposed online has published an analysis of the list and found that “123456? was the most commonly used password, appearing 64 times.

Forty-two percent of the passwords used lowercase letters from “a to z”; only 6 percent mixed alpha-numeric and other characters.

Many of the top 20 passwords used were Spanish names, such as Alejandra and Alberto, suggesting that the victims were in Spanish-speaking communities. Nearly 2,000 of the passwords were only six characters long. The longest password was 30 characters — lafaroleratropezoooooooooooooo.

The recent hack of the website RockYouexposed around 32 million user passwords, which data security firm Imperva has analyzed to create a list of the worst passwords.

Want to know what terms to avoid?

Here are the top ten most commonly used passwords:

1. 123456

2. 12345

3. 123456789

4. Password

5. iloveyou

6. princess

7. rockyou

8. 1234567

9. 12345678

10. abc123

The 10,000 passwords and user names, believed to be booty from a phishing attack, were posted over the weekend to the clipboard site PasteBin. The site owner has since removed the list, but Bogdan Calin of Acunetix grabbed the passwords before it disappeared.

The list included only online account addresses that began with “A” or “B,” suggesting that the list was only part of a larger cache of credentials. On Tuesday, the BBC reported that it had viewed a second list of more than 20,000 account credentials that included Gmail, Yahoo and AOL accounts, and that Google had uncovered a third list containing an unknown number of accounts.

Some of the accounts on the list of 20,000 names the BBC saw appeared to be old, unused or fake, though many were genuine. The list also included Comcast and Earthlink accounts.

Both Google and Microsoft, which own Gmail and Hotmail, MSN and Live.com respectively, have taken measures to block use of the exposed accounts until the legitimate users can reset their passwords.

After months of testing, Mozilla has finally released Firefox 3.6, the newest version of its popular browser.

The new edition of Firefox sports an array of features, least of which is an increase in speed — 20% faster than Firefox 3.5, according to Mozilla. It uses Gecko 1.9.2 web-rendering, which improves its load times, startup speed and stability. Javascript execution is faster and smoother as well.

We’ve talked about some of the other new features before, but our favorite has to be Personas, which lets you customize your Firefox with a single click and without a restart. There’s also autocomplete form functionality and full HTML5 support. You can check out all of the new features here.

The Firefox 3.6 beta has been in testing for several months now, but the release candidates only started coming out this month. It looks like the releases went smoothly, so Mozilla is rolling it out for everyone.

You can visit the Firefox homepage to download the newest edition of the browser.

If you or somebody you know was recently infected because they were tricked into opening a fake shipping label in an email, there’s a quick and easy way to get rid of it. At least, these are the steps that worked on our test machine.

The email would have come in with an attachment named something like UPS_invoice_NR34073.zip, with the following text:

Dear customer!

The courier company was not able to deliver your parcel by your address. Cause: Error in shipping address. You may pickup the parcel at our post office personaly! Please attention! The shipping label is attached to this e-mail.

Please print this label to get this package at our post office.

Naturally, this is a virus that causes your machine to repeatedly reboot itself.

Luckily, there’s a quick and easy fix.

Fixing the Fake UPS Tracking Nmber Virus

When your PC reboots again, hit the F8 key right before Windows starts so you can access the boot options, and then choose Safe Mode.

Once it starts up into Safe Mode, open the Run box and type in shell:startup to get straight to the startup folder, and then delete the file named raryp32.exe from the folder.

You should be able to reboot your machine at this point, and get back into your system. Make sure to run a full virus scan at this point! If you don’t have an anti-virus application, we recommend the free Microsoft Security Essentials.

Note: These are the steps that worked for us on a test machine here at the office. Viruses change over time, so the same steps may not work for you.

Quick and easy mod to a $4 battery powered latte foamer for your office, so that you can run it off of your computer’s USB port.

You love your coffee in the office, and some time you just can’t run out to get one, so you brew your own. But you can’t easily get those nice lovely latte foam tops going. You could purchase expensive machines, but … well, they are expensive. You can get cheap-oh battery operated ones, but you always are running out of battery juice, and they are not that powerful either.

So purchase one of those non-expensive ones, and follow these steps to give it USB power and more torque.

Tools you will need:
- cheap foamer
- a USB cable that won’t be missed
- pliers and/or sharp knife
- soldering gun
- drill

You can get away without soldering if you want to, just twist-tie your wires. Messier, but functional.

One Laptop Per Child (OLPC), MIT professor Nicholas Negroponte’s non-profit effort aimed at putting cheap educational laptops into the hands of developing world schoolchildren, is working on an upgrade to its so-called XO computer, once known as the “hundred-dollar laptop.” That revamped machine, known as the XO-3 and targeted for release in 2012, is still more of a pipe dream than a product. But early designs for the PC reveal a minimalist slate of touch-powered electronics that drops practically every feature of a traditional computer except its 8.5-by-11-inch screen, a scheme that would shed all of the first XO’s child-like clunkiness without losing its simple accessibility. If Behar’s design comes to fruition, the XO-3 will feature a camera on the back of the device and a finger-hold ring on the computer’s corner. That loop, a metal cable that runs from the device’s rim and is encased in the same rubber as the screen frame, can be used to steady the computer in the user’s hand or to let it hang at one’s side. Magnets in the loop could also be used to keep it tucked behind the machine, out of the way.

Firefox only (Windows/Mac/Linux): Firefox extension gui:config adds an advanced settings panel with easy access to options normally hidden behind cryptic about:config options. Once installed, the extension adds a new Advanced Settings item to the Tools menu for accessing the hidden settings. Rather than making you install the add-on to see if the settings apply to you, we’ll just take a quick tour through all of the screens so you can visually figure out if you want to install it or not. The Accessibility tab adds in quite a few useful settings like middle-click paste or changing the backspace key’s default setting to go back a page (an annoyance for many people).Source: Lifehacker

It watches falling sand in an hourglass with an optical sensor. That data is sent via the Arduino USB output to the PC where it’s analyzed. This entropy is useful for all your random number needs. My favorite part: when the hourglass runs dry a servo motor flips it over and it starts again. With the USB Hourglass, the user can look at the sand falling through the center of the hourglass and monitor the randomness in the USB output data. And one can read the code line-by-line, compile it, and upload it to the microcontroller using only open-source and widely supported tools.

Imation’s Pro WX Wireless USB hard drive provides a unique combination of speed, capacity and security in a convenient 3.5-inch form factor. With a fast Wireless USB data transfer rate of up to 15MBs/second, the product can back up a typical CD in under 50 seconds, and store up to 300,000 photos or 750 hours of video. Inherent in its Wireless USB technology, Pro WX wireless hard drive offers an innovative one-to-one connection that limits the possibility of signal interception and securely backs up data whenever it is in range up to 30 feet, similar to a direct attached storage device.Imation argues that, by providing a one-to-one connection over the air, the Pro WX Wireless USB hard drive “limits the possibility of signal interception.” That’s a pretty vague claim to me. They also argue that it works like any other USB drive, although it only transfers data at 15 megabytes per second. That’s not too fast compared to a Network Attached Storage drive over Wi-Fi.
