Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars was quietly released into the App Store this evening. Chinatown Wars for the iPhone seems to lie somewhere in between the DS and PSP versions in regards to graphical quality, but as far as pure GTAgameplay, everything so far seems intact.

Much like other versions of the game, screenshots barely do it justice. Liberty City in motion on the iPhone is amazing, and all the jagged edges in the screenshots quickly fade away when you’re racing down a street, under elevated train tracks, and through alleys as you escape the police. The realtime clock in-game also changes the lighting of the city, shifting from the orange glow of a sunset to the street lights turning on at night. It really looks awesome.

The basic premise of the game involves a man named Huang Lee, the son of a Triad gang boss who was recently sent to sleep with the fishes. He flies in to Liberty City with a heirloom sword his father won in a poker game, deciding to deliver it to his uncle. Of course things never go as planned, and not long after landing Huang finds himself in the middle of a gunfight and winds up getting kidnapped. After stealing the sword, the assailants assume Huang is dead, and looking to dispose of the body drive the car he’s in off the side of a pier. In the same vein of other GTA games, story isn’t really anything revolutionary, but it gets the job done.

Chinatown Wars is controlled very similar to Gameloft’s Gangstar, with virtual buttons and a joystick that handle all the driving, running, shooting, and other activities in game. The iPhone port of Chinatown Wars retains the stylus minigames that filled the DS version, appearing in a little popups where you do things like tap to smash the window of the car you were trapped in at the beginning of the game, slide your finger around to turn a screwdriver to start a car you’re stealing, etc.

The iPhone welcomes a new free app, and it belongs to the White House.

“Today, we’re excited to announce the new White House App available for Apple iPhone and iPod Touch. The White House App delivers dynamic content from WhiteHouse.gov to the palm of your hand,” read the blog entry titled “WhiteHouse.gov: Anywhere” on WhiteHouse.gov, posted on Jan. 19 at 10:38 p.m. EST. Since there are several White House apps on iTunes — priced from .99 cents to $1.99 — be sure to look for the free app called “The White House”

This is the White House’s first iPhone app, and the move was inevitable for a White House that’s been consistently breaking new ground, from hosting online town hall meetings, offering live chats with top administration officials, to creating a robust YouTube channel, which hosts 481 videos, most of which are presidential speeches and events as well as press briefings by Press Secretary Robert Gibbs. And the timing of the app’s release was no coincidence, of course, near the eve of President Obama’s one-year anniversary in office. For the record, Obama’s WhiteHouse.gov officially went live at 12:01 p.m. EST on Jan. 21, 2009.

First released in June 2007, more than 21 million iPhones have been sold worldwide. Some 100,000 apps are available on Apple’s iTune store.

Now, the most powerful office in the land is just a tap away in your iPhone.

Arguably the most innovative feature in in the White House app is live video streaming. Next week, for example, users can watch Obama’s State of the Union address on their iPhone in real time.

This is the first step in the White House’s mobile strategy, according to the White House’s new media department, led by Macon Phillips, a veteran of the Obama campaign. Soon, the White House will launch mobile.WhiteHouse.gov., a mobile-ready version of the White House’s virtual headquarters that is optimized for any Web-enabled mobile device. In other words, WhiteHouse.gov won’t just be iPhone-centric. “Mobile web usage grew over 100% in the last year” in the U.S. and more worldwide, the official blog posting pointed out, linking to a recent TechCrunch article that noted Apple’s dominance (the iPhone and the iPod Touch) in the mobile space, with a 65% market share in the U.S.

“We’ll continue to look for new and emerging technologies to engage the American people and make information about the President and his administration easily available,” the White House blog read.

A few hours later after the app hit iTunes, its first review from user name “goldenev” was posted, giving the White House app the highest score of 5 stars:

More govt organizations should follow the lead. Share with social networking sites would be great. Currently you can email or open in Safari. Notifications, comments integration and searching archives are nice to have. Thanks!

Check out other features of the White House app in the slideshow below, and rate your favorite.

Apple will unveil its “latest creation” Jan. 27 in San Francisco, the company said in an e-mail to journalists Monday. Whether that creation will be a tablet, new iPhone or other device is not known, although there has been plenty of speculation in recent weeks that the Cupertino company will release a tablet computer.

Apple is notoriously secretive about new products and product development. A spate of tablet computers were introduced earlier this month at the Consumer Electronics Show. Dell shared its 5-inch tablet concept at CES, and an HP tablet prototype was also shown. Google and HTC are reportedly also working on a tablet together.

Piper Jaffray analyst and Apple expert Gene Munster said recently that an Apple tablet would likely launch in March. Two models could be available, one with a 7-inch screen, another with a 10-inch screen, and pricing of between $600 and $1,000 has been bandied about.

Apple could also introduce a new version of the iPhone, which is essentially the same now as it has been since its introduction in June 2007. It is the idea of a tablet, however, that has most in the tech world excited, with one pundit describing it as “the most eagerly awaited tablet since Moses delivered the Ten Commandments.”

iPhone accessory maker and recession antidote regular Mophie is about to make the most buzzworthy move of its short history by offering a credit card reader and accompanying transaction app for the Apple handset. Positioned as a direct competitor to Jack Dorsey’s Square iPhone Payment System, Mophie’s solution looks to be integrated into an iPhone case — making it possible to keep the reader on permanently, albeit at a slight cost to your device’s aesthetics. The decidedly cube-shaped Square system has a less ergonomic design, but we suspect that the winner (if either of these two succeeds) will be primarily determined by the usability of the app and affordability of the service. Look out for more info to emerge at some point during the maelstrom that will be CES 2010.

The mobile Web grew 110 percent in the U.S. last year and 148 percent worldwide as measured by growth in pageviews, according to a new Quantcast Mobile Trends report. Even so, the mobile Web accounted for only 1.26 percent of Web consumption in the U.S. (and 0.99 percent worldwide).Apple’s iPhone and iPod Touch drove much of this growth. In the U.S., Apple has a commanding 65 percent market share of mobile Web access as of the end of December, 2009. Only 41 percent of that is from the iPhone. The other 24 percent comes from the iPod Touch, which has been growing rapidly as a mobile Web device even though it only has WiFi. Globally, Apple also dominates in every market except Africa (where simpler and cheaper Java phones still rule).

BTstack allows nomadic use of Bluetooth input devices with the iPhone. The BTstack project is steaming ahead with this demo of a connectedMagic Mouse twirling its pointer all over Apple’s handset. The driver code is still unreleased, but we get to see some nice lag-free interaction between the two devices, suggesting it shouldn’t be too far away from public consumption. As if to answer your earlier quandary, the video also features a Celluon CL800BT virtual keyboard, which projects onto and responds to your touch of any flat surface. A gimmick most likely, but a fun journey into the dream of nomadic computing nonetheless. Check out all the action after the break.

iPhone Developers are constantly looking for new things to come up with. Pocket Heat, which can turn your iPhone into a real heater. But how?The app puts your iPhone at 100% of its power processing capacity in all its systems, which makes the components to overheat. There’s another application like this, called iHandWarmer, but Pocket Heater wins on design principle enought.

HTC is producing a tablet to battle the forthcoming Apple Tablet, according to Australian publication Smarthouse:

HTC, who have been working closely with Google for the past 18 months have several working models of a touch tablet including one model, is based on the new Google Chrome Operating System say sources.

An Android based device which is set to be shown privately to core HTC customers at the CES Show is set to incorporate new Qualcomm processors, touch technology and new software from Adobe.

We’re sure magazine publishers will be happy about the Adobe software, since they’ve built prototypes of tablet versions of their magazines using Adobe Air. HTC is also working with Google on its Nexus One phone which should be coming out early next week.

Among the vendors who are working on a touch tablet PC is HTC, which is confident it has a product that will compete head-on with the Appleoffering.

This is the same company that is set to partner with Google, and which is tipped to be launching a brand new smartphone called the Nexus One on the 5th of January 2010.

Google has sent out invites this week for an “Android press gathering” at its US headquarters. However, it has declined to give any specifics on the forthcoming announcement. There is no news on whether the phone will launch in Australia at the same time as the US.

HTC, which been working closely with Google for the past 18 months, has several working models of a touch tablet, including one model based on the new Google Chrome Operating System, say sources.

An Android-based device that is set to be shown privately to core HTC customers at the CES Show is set to incorporate new Qualcomm processors, touch technology and new software from Adobe.

Google developed the Android operating system for mobile phone operators, with several, including HTC, Motorola and Samsung, now rolling out new models.

The Nexus One—a reference to the film Blade Runner—will run the Android operating software in a handset developed by HTC. Photos of the Nexus One have since circulated the internet, with even a YouTube video emerging, which had a detailed look at the new device’s interface.

Most people are perfectly content to stick their iPod in their pocket. However, for those of you that are Apple nuts, that doesn’t put your precious iPod on display. Instead you need a hat that keeps you warm and shows off your iPod. Of course it does make flipping songs a touch awkward, but at least you’ll look cool. Plus you won’t be stuck wearing headphones underneath your winter hats.

The hat is designed to fit 1st, 2nd, 4th and 5th generation iPod Nanos. It has an internal wiring system and detachable speakers that come included with the hat. The hat has a custom thin speaker casing that is thin enough it won’t make the hat bulge out at all. The outer material is 100% acrylic and the inner is 100% polyester fleece. These hats come in plain white, all black, blue patterned and pink with a pattern. You can purchase one for $49.95. With each of the hats there is a breast cancer awareness version.
